New Delhi, February 4
After Uttarakhand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Gujarat government on Tuesday announced a five-member committee to draft the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said the panel, chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai, will submit its report in 45 days, after which the state government will decide on the law. “As we mark 75 years of the Constitution, Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to implement a uniform law to ensure equal rights,” Patel said.
The committee includes retired IAS officer C.L. Meena, advocate R.C. Kodekar, former vice-chancellor Dakshesh Thaker, and social worker Geetaben Shroff, he further added.
