The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on course to secure a clear majority in the Delhi assembly elections, marking a return to power in the capital after 27 years. The results follow BJP’s recent victories in Haryana and Maharashtra. Among the prominent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia lost their respective seats.
According to the Election Commission of India, as of 1:17 p.m., the BJP was leading in 45 constituencies, while AAP was ahead in 21. Both parties have secured two seats each so far, with counting still in progress. This outcome contrasts sharply with AAP’s landslide wins in 2015 and 2020, when it secured 67 and 62 seats, respectively, in the 70-member assembly. The BJP won just 8 seats in 2020, while Congress failed to win any.
In 2013, BJP emerged as the single-largest party but fell short of a majority with 31 seats. AAP, with 28 seats, briefly formed a government with Congress.
