The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the repatriation of Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma to the Allahabad High Court, following shocking revelations of a large sum of cash found at his official residence.

The discovery, which has sent ripples through India’s legal and political circles, is now under investigation by a three-member panel led by Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu. The committee, formed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, aims to determine the source of the money and any possible misconduct.

A report submitted by Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya detailed the cash seizure and raised further concerns over a fire-damaged room at Varma’s residence, where charred debris was reportedly removed the following morning. The findings suggest the need for deeper scrutiny, with legal experts calling for full transparency in the inquiry.

In response, the Delhi High Court has barred Justice Varma from handling judicial work while the investigation continues. He has also been directed to preserve all digital communications, as investigators examine potential links between the seized cash and electronic records.

The scandal has renewed calls for greater oversight of judicial accountability in India, with political and legal observers watching the case closely.
