China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi is due to arrive in New Delhi today for a three-day official visit, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned trip to China later this month for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. Talks are expected to focus on the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the search for new confidence-building measures, and restoring stability following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes of 2020.
Wang, a senior Politburo member of the Communist Party, is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Modi during his stay — a rare honour for a visiting foreign minister. He will also hold the 24th round of Special Representatives’ talks on the boundary question with India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar is due to hold a separate bilateral meeting with Wang Yi. Officials say the dialogue is intended to prevent further confrontations along the disputed frontier and promote long-term peace.
The visit carries added significance as it comes amid growing strain in India-US relations, following Washington’s decision to raise tariffs on Indian goods.
