Ministry of External Affairs( MEA) has responded to comments made by US President Donald Trump claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi told him India would not buy oil from Russia, describing it as a “big stop.” In a statement issued on Thursday, the MEA said that India has consistently worked to expand its energy procurement over the past decade, including strengthening cooperation with United States. “Discussions are ongoing,” the statement said.
The MEA underlined that India is a major importer of oil and gas and that its import policies are guided by national interest. “It has been our consistent priority to safeguard the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario,” the statement read.
It further added that ensuring stable prices and secure supplies remain the twin goals of India’s energy policy. This includes broadening energy sources and diversifying suppliers based on market conditions.
