Chandigarh, October 30
The Haryana State Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of a shocking incident at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) in Rohtak, where female staff members were allegedly forced to remove their clothes and photographed to “prove” they were menstruating.
According to reports, the incident occurred on the evening of October 26, when two supervisors allegedly stopped several women staff members for arriving late to work. When the women explained they were facing menstrual discomfort, the supervisors accused them of lying and demanded proof.
In a disturbing turn, one of the supervisors reportedly ordered a female staff member to make other women remove their clothes and even take photographs and videos as “evidence.” The matter came to light when the female employees sent the photos and videos to Haryana Women’s Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia.
The humiliating act triggered outrage among the staff, and soon after, the university campus witnessed protests as student organisations joined in solidarity with the women employees.
Describing the act as “disgusting and inhumane,” Bhatia said, “There can be nothing more outrageous than demanding proof of a woman’s period.” She confirmed that the Commission had written to the Superintendent of Police, Rohtak, seeking a detailed report on the action taken so far.
Bhatia said the victims have been contacted and encouraged to speak directly with the Commission. “This is not just a violation of privacy but an assault on dignity and womanhood,” she added, promising swift and strict action against those responsible.
The incident has sparked national outrage, with women’s rights groups demanding accountability from the university administration and stronger protection for women employees at workplaces.
