Canada will significantly reduce the number of international student permits issued and impose stricter regulations on foreign workers, Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “We are granting 35% fewer international student permits this year. And next year, that number’s going down by another 10%,” Trudeau said. He emphasised that while immigration remains a crucial driver of Canada’s economy, the government is determined to crack down on those abusing the system to exploit students.
The policy shift reflects growing concerns over the strain on housing and public services in regions with high international student populations.
