Centre is set to launch its national census in 2025, with the process expected to continue into 2026, followed by a delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies slated for completion by 2028. The exercise, which typically occurs every decade, was postponed from 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The upcoming census may also introduce adjustments to the census cycle and is likely to include surveys on religion, social class, and sub-sects within General and SC-ST categories, the news outlet India Today reported quoting the sources. While some opposition parties have pushed for a caste census, the government has yet to make a final decision on that aspect.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah indicated in August that the upcoming decadal census would be conducted “at an appropriate time,” adding that he would announce the specifics once finalized. Shah also noted that the next national census would be fully digital, with data collected via a mobile phone application.
