Chandigarh, November 14
Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar on Thursday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the decision to allocate 10 acres of land in Chandigarh to Haryana for a separate state assembly, urging the cancellation of the allotment. Jakhar argued that the move threatens Punjab’s historic and emotional connection to Chandigarh, which holds deep cultural significance for the people of Punjab.
The decision has been widely opposed by various political parties in Punjab, including AAP, Congress, and SAD. Jakhar, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), emphasized that Chandigarh is more than just land—it is a symbol of Punjab’s identity and heritage.
Jakhar further criticized Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for reportedly supporting Haryana’s land request during a North Zonal Council meeting in Jaipur. Instead of opposing the demand, Mann also called for land allocation for Punjab’s assembly in Chandigarh, a move Jakhar believes weakened Punjab’s claim to the capital.
“The Chief Minister’s stance has complicated Punjab’s position, and it is unfair that the people of Punjab bear the consequences of his anti-Punjab approach,” Jakhar said.
