Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday called for stronger laws to regulate social media and OTT platforms, citing the decline of traditional editorial checks and the rise of unfiltered content. Addressing Parliament during the Lok Sabha session, Vaishnaw stressed the cultural differences between India and regions where these platforms were developed, advocating for tailored regulations to protect Indian sensitivities.
“We live in an era dominated by social media and OTT platforms,” Vaishnaw said, “but the lack of editorial oversight has allowed vulgar and uncontrolled expression to flourish.” He urged the Parliamentary Standing Committee to prioritize discussions on stricter laws, emphasizing the need for societal consensus to address these challenges.
