New Delhi, December 12
In a major decision, Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill, paving the way for its introduction in Parliament during the ongoing Winter session. The proposed legislation aims to synchronise elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, with local body polls to follow within 100 days.
The Bill, as per parliamentary procedure, will be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed scrutiny. The framework was outlined in a report by a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind and approved by the Cabinet in September. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had already lauded the initiative, stating, “The Cabinet has accepted the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections.” The move is seen as a significant reform aimed at reducing election-related costs and enhancing governance.
