Dhankhar urges media to build public pressure on MPs to uphold democratic institutions

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday criticized the lack of significant debates and contributions in the Indian Parliament in recent decades. He questioned, “Have you noticed any great debate in Parliament in the last few decades?” and lamented that the country is “in the news for the wrong reason.” Dhankhar emphasized the role of the media in ensuring accountability, stating that the media is the primary means of reaching the people. He called on the media to generate public pressure on representatives to uphold the sanctity of democratic institutions, warning against narratives aimed at destabilizing constitutional structures. The Vice President also praised the historic 2023 Constitutional Amendment, which grants one-third reservation for women in State Legislatures and the Lok Sabha, calling it a “game-changer” and a significant step for women’s participation in policy-making and governance.

Reflecting on his own parliamentary experience, Dhankhar recalled the atmosphere in Parliament during the 1989 Bofors scandal, which led to major political changes, and noted that debates in those days were marked by wit, humor, and a healthy discourse between the ruling and opposition benches.

Dhankhar further noted the rising presence of women journalists globally, emphasizing that their numbers are growing in India as well, highlighting their significant contributions to media and public discourse.
