Bangladesh Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan resigned from his position as the head of Bangladesh’s judiciary amid protests led by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. According to the media reports, Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Prof. Asif Nazrul confirmed the resignation that afternoon.
Bangladesh based news outlet the Dhaka Tribune reported that five other judges from the Appellate Division might step down following Hassan’s resignation. In the interim, Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam has been appointed as the acting chief justice. This appointment was confirmed by the Supreme Court’s Public Relations Officer, Md Shafiqul Islam, who informed the media of the development. Justice Islam completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in law from the University of Dhaka.
