Chandigarh, September 25
The Punjab Department of Home Affairs and Justice has issued a show-cause notice to former Mohali SSP Vivek Sheel Soni and two other officers, Amandeep Singh Brar and Gursher Singh, over the telecast of a gangster’s Lawrence Bishnoi’s interview from the Kharar CIA police station. The interview took place between September 3-4, 2022, under the supervisory jurisdiction of these officers. The information in this regard was submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court by the Punjab government yesterday, according to media reports.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court was informed of actions against four police officers, including Soni, highlighting the accountability of senior officials in security breaches. The court had emphasized that responsibility should extend beyond lower-level officials, as the interview raised national security concerns and could have influenced witnesses. The gangster in question, Bishnoi, was involved in 71 criminal cases, including charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The Bench also warned that such incidents could worsen law and order in Punjab, a sensitive border state, and serve as tools for anti-national elements, the news outlet The Tribune reported.
