Chandigarh, January 16
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest outside the residence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, accusing his administration of failing to curb rising crime and gangster activity in the state. The security personnel blocked the demonstrators from entering the premises, prompting BJP leaders to sit on the road and chant slogans against the government. The protest was led by Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar, working president Ashwani Sharma and Union Minister Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu.
The Party leaders alleged that shootings and killings were occurring almost daily in Punjab and accused the government of ignoring the deteriorating law and order situation. They demanded that Mann remove barricades and hear their concerns, warning that voters would respond in the 2027 elections if conditions did not improve. Even
Scuffles broke out as protesters tried to move forward, leading police to detain several leaders including Jakhar. Addressing supporters, Bittu criticised the government’s record, claiming no new medical colleges had been built and major recruitment drives had stalled over the past four years. He also pointed to incomplete infrastructure projects, including a rail bridge in the Chief Minister’s constituency.The BJP said the protest was intended to highlight public safety concerns and demand greater accountability from the state government.
