Solan, April 16
A BTech student at the Jaypee University of Information Technology in Solan district sustained serious injuries after allegedly attempting suicide by jumping from the roof of a hostel building. The incident, which occurred late Wednesday night, led to immediate police intervention and triggered protests by the student body on campus.
The student reportedly leaped from the hostel rooftop and was discovered by fellow classmates, who alerted the university administration and local police. Following the fall, the victim was provided preliminary first aid on-site before being rushed to the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla for specialized medical care.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Solan, Tirumalaraju SD Varma, confirmed the incident on Thursday and stated that an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the suicide attempt. Police officials are currently recording statements from witnesses and university staff to piece together the events leading up to the jump.
The campus witnessed a surge in tension following the incident as groups of students gathered to raise slogans against the university authorities. While the administration has expressed its commitment to investigating the matter, the atmosphere remained tense throughout Thursday morning. University officials have confirmed they are conducting an internal inquiry alongside the police investigation to understand the factors that led to the student’s decision.
