The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has reprimanded the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and its affiliates, including The Suburban Table Tennis Association (TSTTA), Maharashtra State Table Tennis Association (MSTTA), and Gujarat State Table Tennis Association (GSTTA), for violating competition norms under Sections 3(4) and 4 of the Competition Act, 2002. The inquiry followed a complaint by the TT Friendly Super League Association, which alleged restrictive practices by TTFI and its affiliates. The allegations included denial of access to players for events and the issuance of a WhatsApp advisory barring participation, alongside anti-competitive clauses in TTFI’s governing documents.
The CCI determined that TTFI and its affiliates held dominant positions in organizing table tennis tournaments and facilitating player services. It concluded that actions such as issuing restrictive advisories and incorporating anti-competitive clauses hindered open competition, breaching legal provisions.
However, the Commission noted corrective steps taken by TTFI and its affiliates, including amending bye-laws, retracting notices, and promoting competitive practices. A cease-and-desist order was issued, but no monetary penalty was imposed.
