Congress leader Shivraj Patil passes away

Former Union Home Minister and senior Congress leader Shivraj Patil died on Friday in Maharashtra’s Latur district after a brief illness. He was 90. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing Patil as an experienced leader who had dedicated his life to public service. Modi said he was “saddened” by the former minister’s passing and recalled Patil’s long record of service as MLA, MP, Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He added that they last met a few months ago when Patil visited his residence.

In a message on X, the Prime Minister praised Patil’s commitment to social welfare and democratic values, saying his contributions would be remembered with respect.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute, calling Patil a leader with “vast knowledge of public affairs” and decades of dedicated service. Shah extended his condolences to Patil’s family and well-wishers.  “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shivraj Patil Ji. We were colleagues for a long time, worked closely as Union Ministers & he was also a family friend for over 45 years. Honest, soft-spoken and deeply dignified, his loss is immense. My heartfelt condolences to his family. RIP,” wrote Ghulam Nabi Azad in a post on X.
