The Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) Observatory, the largest imaging Cherenkov telescope in Asia, has been inaugurated by Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission IN Ladakh. Located at an altitude of ~4,300 meters, it is also the highest telescope of its kind globally. Built indigenously by BARC with Indian industry partners, the telescope aims to study high-energy gamma rays.
During the inauguration, Dr. Mohanty hailed the MACE Observatory as a landmark achievement, placing India at the forefront of cosmic-ray research. He emphasized the observatory’s role in advancing both scientific knowledge and the socio-economic development of Ladakh, encouraging students to pursue careers in astronomy and astrophysics. The event was part of the DAE’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
