The Election Commission of India is set to begin the process of electing a new Vice-President following the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, whose departure from office has taken many by surprise.
The Ministry of Home Affairs formally notified Dhankhar’s resignation on Monday evening. President Droupadi Murmu accepted it shortly thereafter. The 73-year-old cited medical advice and the need to prioritise his health as reasons for stepping down, ending a tenure of less than two years.
Dhankhar assumed office in August 2022, succeeding M Venkaiah Naidu. His resignation, submitted under Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution, marks an unusual mid-term vacancy in one of the country’s top constitutional roles.
In his resignation letter, he expressed gratitude to President Murmu for her “unwavering support” and described their working relationship as “soothing and wonderful”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the news on Tuesday, posting on X (formerly Twitter): “Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice-President of India. Wishing him good health.”
Reflecting on his brief stint in office, Dhankhar called it a “privilege and satisfaction” to witness India’s “economic transformation” and “enhanced global stature”. He also acknowledged Members of Parliament for their “warmth, trust, and affection”, calling their support unforgettable.
Before assuming the role of Vice-President, Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal and held various portfolios in state and central governments.
The Election Commission is now expected to announce the schedule for the Vice-Presidential election in the coming days.
