Chandigarh, April 15

The Enforcement Directorate carried out searches on Wednesday at premises linked to Ashok Mittal in Punjab, in connection with a probe under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, official sources said. The 61-year-old businessman and educationist heads the Lovely Group, which includes a private university, and was recently elevated to deputy leader of the Aam Aadmi Party in the Rajya Sabha, replacing Raghav Chadha.

The operation targeted multiple business entities associated with Mittal in Jalandhar and Phagwara, among other locations. Reacting on raids, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of using federal agencies to gain an advantage ahead of the state’s next assembly elections. The AAP’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal echoed the charge, alleging that the investigation forms part of a broader pattern of political pressure orchestrated through central agencies in the run-up to the polls.

The Enforcement Directorate has not publicly commented beyond confirming that the searches are part of an ongoing FEMA investigation.
