Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, currently in India after her government’s fall due to a massive uprising, has called for an investigation into the violent incidents that followed. She urged that those responsible for the killings, vandalism, and arson be identified and held accountable, reported by the news outlet Sarkatitel quoting the Bangladesh news outlet The Daily Star.
Her statement, shared by her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy on Facebook, reflects deep sorrow over the loss of over 500 lives since July. Hasina expressed her condolences to the victims, including students, police officers, and civilians, and compared the recent violence to the tragic events of August 15, 1975, when her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and most of her family were assassinated. She appealed to the nation to observe National Mourning Day on August 15 with solemnity, honoring the memory of her father.
