Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, former West Bengal Chief Minister and veteran CPM leader, passed away at his Kolkata residence at age 80. He had long battled respiratory issues and had been frequently hospitalized. Bhattacharjee served as Chief Minister from 2000 to 2011, succeeding Jyoti Basu. His tenure saw the CPM’s defeat in the 2011 state elections, ending a 34-year Communist rule, as reported by the news outlet NDTV.
Known for his simplicity, Bhattacharjee’s organs will be donated for medical research. Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and CPM leaders expressing their condolences.
