Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday dismissed reports about the imposition of a so-called “toilet tax” in Himachal Pradesh, calling the claims baseless and politically motivated. Speaking to the media in New Delhi, Sukhu suggested the rumours were possibly spread by the BJP to gain traction in the ongoing Haryana elections.
“No one should politicize issues for electoral gains, especially when the allegations are entirely unfounded,” Sukhu remarked.
His comments came after several BJP leaders, including Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, criticized the Himachal government over the matter. Sitharaman took to social media platform X, accusing the Congress of taxing toilets, in contrast to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat mission.
The Himachal Pradesh Jal Shakti Department also issued a statement refuting the media reports, clarifying that no notification had been issued linking sewage connections to the number of toilet seats.
