Himachal Pradesh has officially renamed its Raj Bhavan as Lok Bhavan, following approval from the Governor and the issuance of a state notification on Tuesday. The decision aligns with a nationwide move to replace the term Raj Bhavan—a colonial-era designation—with Lok Bhavan, reflecting a more democratic character. According to the notification, the new name will now be used in all official communication, documents, building signages, websites and government records.
The Raj Bhavan received a formal communication from the central government regarding the change, after which Governor’s Secretary C.P. Verma issued the notification. The renaming follows a decision taken at the national conference of Governors, where it was suggested that titles such as Raj Bhavan symbolised a colonial mindset. Under the revised policy, all Raj Bhavans across the country will now be known as Lok Bhavans.
