The Union Power Ministry has agreed to provide 500 million units of electricity to Himachal Pradesh at a lower rate during the lean winter months. The decision followed a meeting between Himachal Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar during Sukhu’s visit to New Delhi. Khattar assured CM Sukhu that the power supply would help Himachal avoid purchasing electricity at high rates, as the state’s generation capacity significantly drops in winter due to reduced water flow in rivers, according to media reports. Last year, Himachal’s power generation fell by 65%, while demand exceeded supply due to less inflow of water in rivers.
