India, China defence ministers to meet today in Laos

 Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun are set to meet today in Laos on the sidelines of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Plus (ADMM-Plus) meeting. This will mark the second high-level India-China meeting in just two days.

On November 19, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Rio de Janeiro at the G20 summit. Their discussions focused on progress in India-China border disengagement and future steps in bilateral relations. Jaishankar confirmed the progress in disengagement at the India-China border and mentioned global issues were also discussed.

The disengagement process between Indian and Chinese forces in eastern Ladakh’s Depsang Plains and Demchok regions has been successfully completed, with both sides verifying troop withdrawals and dismantling military infrastructure.

At the recent BRICS Summit in Kazan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed the importance of maintaining peace along the border and resolving disputes diplomatically. Both leaders welcomed the troop disengagement and called for better communication to prevent tensions.

Jaishankar has credited the success of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) patrolling agreement to military and diplomatic efforts. However, he acknowledged that full normalization of relations remains a long-term goal, requiring time to rebuild trust.
