The new Maharashtra government under the Mahayuti alliance will be formed on December 5, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislative party meeting on December 2 to elect its leader. Devendra Fadnavis is seen as the frontrunner for the chief ministerial post, BJP leaders said.
Caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with deputies Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Thursday to finalise a power-sharing agreement. Shinde, who resigned on Tuesday, expressed unconditional support for any decision by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), secured a landslide victory in the recent Assembly elections. The BJP won 132 out of 148 seats it contested, while Shiv Sena claimed 57. Meanwhile, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) suffered a resounding defeat.
