NABARD plays key role in strengthening Himachal’s rural economy: Chief Secretary

India’s rural development lender NABARD has projected a credit potential of ₹45,809.93 crore for Himachal Pradesh for the 2026–27 financial year, with a strong focus on agriculture, rural development and the MSME sector.The estimate, presented at NABARD’s State Credit Seminar 2026–27 in Shimla, marks an 8.44% increase over the previous year’s allocation for priority sectors.

Speaking at the event, Himachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Sanjay Gupta said NABARD had played a crucial role in strengthening the state’s rural economy. He noted that despite being a small hill state, Himachal Pradesh’s development model relies heavily on rural growth, an area where NABARD’s contribution has been “significant and sustained”.

The state government, he added, is prioritising rural economic development and will work closely with NABARD to expand credit access and improve livelihoods.

Outlining the details of the plan, NABARD Chief General Manager Dr Vivek Pathania said the proposed credit outlay of ₹45,809.93 crore would prioritise key sectors, with special emphasis on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

He said the focus on MSMEs is aimed at helping small and medium industries grow, adopt new technologies, and strengthen market access and marketing support, alongside continued backing for agriculture and allied activities.
