Nagpur Police have imposed a curfew in multiple areas after violent clashes erupted on Monday night, following rumours that a sacred text had been desecrated during a demonstration demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Khuldabad, according to the media reports.
Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Singhal invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to enforce the curfew. The order will remain in effect until further notice. The curfew imposed in many areas include Kotwali, Ganeshpet, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpavli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imamwada, Yashodharanagar, and Kapilnagar police station areas, barring movement except for medical emergencies, the news outlet The Indian Express reported.
The unrest was reportedly triggered by the burning of a green cloth, which some believed contained sacred verses, NDTV reported. Clashes broke out as a group of 80 to 100 people turned violent, pelting stones at police and setting vehicles on fire. Officers responded with baton charges and tear gas. Four civilians and over a dozen police personnel were injured.
