Dr. Sudhir Kumar, a leading neurologist at Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad, has recently highlighted the profound impact of even minor sleep deprivation. In a recent post on X, Dr. Kumar explained that losing just one hour of sleep can significantly disrupt a person’s well-being, potentially requiring up to four days to fully recover. He emphasized that consistent sleep is crucial for maintaining cognitive function and overall health.
Dr. Kumar also provided insights into the recommended amount of sleep based on age: Newborns (up to 3 months old) need 14 to 17 hours of sleep, while infants (4 to 12 months) require 12 to 16 hours, including naps. Young children (1 to 5 years) need 10 to 14 hours, including naps, while school-aged children (6 to 12 years) should aim for 9 to 12 hours. Teenagers (13 to 18 years) need 8 to 10 hours, and adults (18 years and older) should get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night.
