Kurukshetra, April 10
Priyanshu Sharma, a third-year civil engineering student at NIT Kurukshetra from Sherpura village in Sirsa district, Haryana, was found dead in his hostel room on Wednesday night. According to police, he was discovered hanging from the ceiling fan.
Authorities think the student may have died by suicide, but the exact cause is not yet known. No suicide note was found. Assistant Sub-Inspector Vinod Kumar, who is leading the investigation, said Sharma called a friend between 6:30 pm and 7 pm, asking him to visit later and mentioning the door would be open. When the friend arrived around 11:15 pm, he found the door locked from the inside and got no response after knocking several times.
Other students were called for help, and when they looked through a rear window, they saw Sharma hanging. Police and institute officials were informed immediately. The room was opened, and Sharma was taken down. His body was sent for a post-mortem and later handed over to his parents when they arrived at the campus early Thursday morning.
Authorities are investigating the recent tragedy that has shaken the campus. The institute has not released an official statement, but students are coming together to mourn the loss of their classmate.
