New Delhi, January 20
Nitin Nabin formally took charge as the national president of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the party headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday, marking a key leadership transition within the organisation. At 45, Nitin Nabin is the youngest-ever BJP national president.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the ceremony, alongside senior cabinet ministers including Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. Chief ministers from several BJP-ruled states were also present, underlining the party’s focus on unity and organisational strength.
Modi congratulated Nabin on his appointment, describing the BJP as the world’s largest political party. He said the internal election process, from the grassroots to the national level, had been conducted in a fully democratic manner and completed in a transparent and formal way.
Outgoing BJP president JP Nadda thanked the prime minister for his guidance and leadership, saying Prime Minister Modi had consistently provided direction to the party despite his demanding responsibilities as head of government. He credited the prime minister’s close attention to organisational details with strengthening the party’s structure nationwide.
Nabin, who had been serving as the party’s working president, is expected to focus on strengthening the BJP’s organisational base and preparing it for upcoming electoral challenges.
The leadership change comes as the BJP looks to consolidate its position ahead of future state and national elections, with party leaders expressing confidence in Nabin’s ability to lead the organisation forward.
