The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organization representing atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, known as Hibakusha. The committee recognized this grassroots movement for its commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons and for sharing personal testimonies that underscore the imperative of never using nuclear arms again.
In granting this year’s prize to Nihon Hidankyo, the committee aims to honor all atomic bomb survivors who, despite their physical suffering and painful memories, have chosen to transform their experiences into a platform for peace and hope. Their efforts enable society to articulate the unspeakable, confront the unimaginable, and comprehend the profound suffering caused by nuclear weapons.
