Shimla, April 13
Opposition parties have intensified their protest against the government’s proposal to shift Kamla Nehru Hospital (KNH), the state’s only maternal and child healthcare facility, to IGMC.
The All India Democratic Women’s Association staged a protest outside KNH, raising slogans against the Sukhu government and calling the decision anti-women. The protesters warned of an intensified struggle if the decision is not withdrawn. The BJP has also opposed the move, accusing the government of attempting to shut down the historic hospital.
Speaking at the protest, AIDWA secretary Falma Chauhan said shifting the 102-year-old hospital, named after freedom fighter Kamla Nehru, would be an insult to her legacy. She said the move would cause inconvenience to pregnant women, as KNH currently provides comprehensive maternal and child healthcare services under one roof.
Chauhan further alleged that the government intends to convert the hospital premises into an MLA hostel, terming it an injustice to women. She asserted that the organization would launch a decisive agitation against the decision and would not allow the hospital to be relocated.
The controversy has triggered political debate in the state, with opposition parties and women’s groups demanding that the government reconsider its decision.
