Hamirpur, March 25
A newborn was allegedly abandoned by his parents shortly after birth at Dr Radhakrishnan Medical College and Hospital, officials said on Tuesday. According to hospital authorities, the incident took place on Monday when a couple, reportedly of Nepalese origin, arrived at the facility for delivery. The woman gave birth to a baby, but soon after, both parents allegedly showed little concern for the infant and behaved indifferently.
Witnesses claimed that the couple attempted to sell the newborn for Rs 10,000–15,000 within the hospital premises. However, their proposal was ignored by those present.
Sensing that their actions might draw attention, the couple allegedly fled the hospital, leaving the newborn behind. The infant was later found crying inside the premises.
Doctors from the paediatrics department alerted the hospital administration upon discovering the situation. The child helpline was subsequently informed to ensure the baby’s safety and proper care.
Hospital authorities have initiated a review of CCTV footage to trace the couple. Medical Superintendent Dr Des Raj Sharma confirmed that information had been received regarding the alleged abandonment by the parents.
