Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has expressed strong disapproval of Amazon’s business practices in India, particularly accusing the e-commerce giant of predatory pricing. According to the New Indian Express , speaking at an event on the impact of e-commerce, Goyal stated that Amazon’s much-publicized billion-dollar investments in India are not a cause for celebration, but rather an attempt to offset significant losses incurred due to its pricing strategies. He pointed out that Amazon’s Rs 6,000 crore losses in a single year raise concerns of predatory pricing, which, according to Goyal, could be damaging to India’s traditional retail sector.

Goyal also raised concerns about the growing dominance of e-commerce in India and its potential negative impact on local businesses and employment. He warned that if half of India’s market becomes part of the e-commerce network within the next decade, it could spell trouble for traditional retailers and small businesses. The minister urged stakeholders to study the impact of e-commerce on the Indian economy thoroughly and scientifically, highlighting sectors like pharmacies and mobile repair shops that may be particularly vulnerable to this shift.
