New Delhi, July 4
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was served a traditional meal on a Sohari leaf during a formal dinner hosted by Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. The ceremonial dinner highlighted the cultural ties between the Caribbean nation and India, particularly the enduring heritage of the Indian diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago.
In a post on social media platform X, Modi said: “The dinner hosted by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had food served on a Sohari leaf, which is of great cultural significance to the people of Trinidad & Tobago, especially those with Indian roots. Here, food is often served on this leaf during festivals and other special programmes.”
The Sohari leaf is traditionally used in many Indo-Caribbean homes, especially during religious events and celebrations. Modi is on a diplomatic visit to the Caribbean region, where strengthening historical and cultural linkages with countries of the Indian diaspora remains a key theme.
