PM Modi stresses border peace as key to India-China ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has underlined the importance of peace and stability along the India-China border during a meeting with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New Delhi. Modi said India remained committed to finding a “fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable” resolution of the boundary question and noted progress in relations since his meeting with President Xi Jinping in Kazan last year. He welcomed developments such as the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, describing them as examples of “mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity.”

Wang, who is also a member of the Communist Party’s Politburo, delivered a message and invitation from President Xi for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin. He conveyed Beijing’s positive assessment of recent talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the 24th meeting of the Special Representatives, which he co-chaired with India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

Modi thanked Xi for the invitation and confirmed his participation in the summit. He voiced support for China’s presidency of the SCO this year, adding that “stable, predictable and constructive” ties between New Delhi and Beijing would be vital for regional and global peace and prosperity.
