The government is formally recognising the contribution of peacekeepers who served in Operation Pawan, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said. Speaking on Wednesday, he said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government was not only openly acknowledging the role of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) but was also putting in place a process to recognise their service “at every level”.
He said Indian forces involved in Operation Pawan had displayed “extraordinary courage, valour and professional prowess”, adding that many soldiers laid down their lives while performing their duties. He said the government was also honouring the IPKF peacekeepers at the National War Memorial, ensuring that their sacrifice received full national recognition. Operation Pawan was launched in the 1987 as part of India’s peacekeeping mission in Sri Lanka, during which Indian troops were deployed in difficult and often hostile conditions.
