Former BJP MP Roopa Ganguli was detained in Kolkata on Thursday morning after staging an overnight protest outside Bansdroni Police Station, demanding the arrest of a suspect involved in a fatal road accident, the local media reported. The protest followed the death of a ninth-grade student who was struck by a JCB vehicle in South Kolkata’s Bansdroni area, with the driver fleeing the scene, according to Times Now. Despite attempts to persuade her to stop, Ganguli refused, prompting police to take her into custody.
Locals criticized poor road conditions and police inaction, labeling the incident a “state-sponsored murder” and calling for accountability from local officials. The accused remains at large, and protests are being monitored by the police, Times Now reported.
