A Delhi court on Tuesday sentenced former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment for his involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He was convicted of the double murder of a father and son in Saraswati Vihar. Kumar, already serving a life term in another riot-related case, was found guilty of leading a mob that killed Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh on November 1, 1984, following the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The prosecution had sought the death penalty, arguing Kumar incited violence, looted property, and assaulted family members.
The case, originally filed at Punjabi Bagh police station, was reopened on the recommendation of the Justice G.P. Mathur Committee. Senior advocate H.S. Phoolka, representing the victims, called the riots “a crime against humanity,” while Kumar’s defense questioned witness credibility and cited his pending Supreme Court appeal in a separate case.
