Jammu, August 27
At least 33 people have died and 14 others were injured after a landslide struck the route to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, officials said. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon after continuous heavy rainfall triggered the collapse along a stretch of the pilgrimage path leading to the hilltop shrine at Trikuta. Rescue operations were immediately launched, with the injured taken to nearby hospitals.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed grief, describing the tragedy as “saddening.” “My thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest. The administration is assisting all those affected. My prayers are for everyone’s safety and well-being,” he said. Authorities have deployed rescue teams and medical staff to assist pilgrims and local residents in the area.
