A man suspected in an apparent assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump is in custody after being apprehended unarmed, according to reports. The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, was arrested after abandoning his assault rifle at a golf course and fleeing the scene, UK-based media outlet The Guardian reported on Sunday, citing official sources while quoting news agency .
Law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, said the suspect’s identity had not been officially confirmed as of Sunday evening. However, several mainstream media outlets have named Routh, also quoting anonymous sources. Routh’s son, Oran Routh, told The Guardian he had not been in contact with his father since the incident.
The alleged gunman was reportedly positioned farther away from Trump than the individual involved in a previous assassination attempt in Pennsylvania in July. However, a scope was found on the rifle among the belongings Routh left behind, which could have placed Trump within range, officials said.
The news outlet reported that Routh, a former construction worker from North Carolina, has been described as an outspoken critic of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He had previously sought to recruit volunteers to fight for Ukraine, according to the report. His son confirmed that Routh had volunteered in Ukraine.
