US President Donald Trump today imposed 25 percent tariff on India. In a post on X previously known as Twitter, 25 percent tariff and additional penalties from August 1. In a statement shared on his social media platform, Trump acknowledged India as a friend but accused it of maintaining some of the highest tariffs in the world and imposing what he called “strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers.”
“Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high,” Trump wrote. He added that India has continued to purchase a majority of its military equipment from Russia and remains one of Moscow’s largest energy buyers, alongside China.
“At a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine — all things not good!” he said, referring to India’s continued trade with Russia during the war in Ukraine.
Citing these reasons, Trump announced that India “will therefore be paying a tariff of 25%, plus a penalty,” starting from August 1.
