US President Donald Trump has said Iran has agreed to let 20 oil-carrying ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz from Monday morning, describing the move as a “sign of respect”.
Speaking to reporters on board Air Force One on Sunday night while travelling to Washington, Trump said talks with Iran were progressing well, but added that negotiations remained unpredictable.
“I would only say that we’re doing extremely well in that negotiation but you never know with Iran,” he said.
Trump also said Tehran had responded to a 15-point ceasefire proposal put forward by the US, claiming Iranian officials had accepted “most of the points”.
“They gave us most of the points. Why wouldn’t they?” he said, without giving further details about what concessions had been made.
Asked to elaborate, Trump said only that Iran was “agreeing with us on the plan”.
He also claimed that Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, was alive but “very seriously in trouble” and “seriously wounded”.
There was no immediate public confirmation from Iranian officials on Trump’s claims about shipping through the Strait of Hormuz or the reported progress on the proposed ceasefire plan.
