Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud on Monday addressed recent criticism over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to his residence for Ganpati puja, calling it “unnecessary, unwarranted, and illogical. CJI Chandrachud emphasized that visits by political leaders to judges’ homes for social occasions do not compromise judicial independence, the news outlet The Times of India reported.
Chandrachud clarified that judicial matters are never discussed at these meetings, which typically focus on topics such as judicial infrastructure and administrative issues. He added that such social visits, often involving pleasantries, are not unusual and do not affect the judiciary’s independence.
“The PM and Chief Ministers do visit the residences of CJIs and other judges for events like children’s weddings or festivals,” Chandrachud said, noting that these interactions are strictly social and devoid of judicial discussions, the news outlet reported.
