The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday criticized remarks made by Karnataka High Court judge, Justice V. Srishananda, who had referred to a locality in Bengaluru as ‘Pakistan.’ A five-judge bench, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, stated, “We cannot call any part of India’s territory as Pakistan. This contradicts the nation’s territorial integrity.”
The Supreme Court closed the suo motu proceedings after the High Court judge apologized for the comments. The bench expressed concern over such casual remarks, warning that they could reflect personal biases, particularly against certain genders or communities.
“This casual observation may reflect personal biases and should not be tolerated, especially when they might perpetuate patriarchal or misogynistic stereotypes,” the bench said. The court stressed the importance of discharging responsibilities without bias or prejudice, urging stakeholders to exercise caution in their remarks.
