The government is actively encouraging farmers to transition from traditional wheat and paddy cultivation to horticulture as part of its efforts to promote agricultural diversification. According to Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat , these initiatives aim to address the environmental challenges caused by extensive wheat and paddy farming, such as groundwater depletion and soil degradation. The government is offering financial incentives, technical support, and training programs to farmers willing to make the shift.
The Minister also emphasized that horticulture can improve farmers’ income, reduce the stress on natural resources, and ensure sustainable agricultural practices. Various schemes are being rolled out to make the transition smooth, including subsidies for purchasing seeds, modern farming equipment, and access to cold storage facilities. This move is seen as essential for ensuring long-term food security and preserving the ecological balance.
The Horticulture Minister stated that the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is continuously working towards making the state’s farmers more prosperous and improving their economic conditions. He highlighted that efforts are being made to encourage farmers to shift from traditional wheat and paddy crops to horticulture profession.
Mohinder Bhagat further mentioned that the Punjab government is working to establish the state as a hub for potato seed production. He urged the officials of the Horticulture Department to ensure that the current schemes aimed at the welfare of farmers reach them effectively.
Cabinet Minister reiterated that the Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is committed to the welfare of farmers. He assured that the state government will provide all possible support to farmers engaged in professions that enhance their income.
