BSF constable dies in NCB custody: Police

A Border Security Force constable, who was picked up by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for questioning on March 3, has died in the central agency’s custody, with his family alleging that he had been brutally assaulted.

BSF constable Jaswinder Singh was picked up from Jammu on March 3 for questioning in connection with a case under investigation. He died during treatment on Friday night in Amritsar.

Amritsar’s Maqboolpura Station House Officer, Jasjit Singh, said the NCB was investigating a case and the BSF constable died after his condition suddenly deteriorated.

Further investigation into the matter was underway, he said.

A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Amritsar Civil Hospital on Saturday.

Jaswinder Singh’s mother, Gurmeet Kaur, a resident of Jammu, said her son had come home on leave. He was picked up by the Jammu unit of the NCB on March 3, she told reporters on Sunday.

The family was informed on March 20 that his health had deteriorated, said Kaur, adding that they were not informed why he was taken away.

“We want justice in the matter, she said.

The family claimed that Jaswinder Singh was brutally thrashed and held a protest in Jammu on Sunday, demanding justice. Jaswinder Singh’s wife sought the strictest action against those responsible for his death.
